About CELSO:
Driven Arts Collective’s CELSO Project (Community Emotional Light Sound Organism) is a multi-year performance-research project translating the bio-emotional data of dancers through emotion recognition, facial muscle movement, pulse, EEG, and other wearable sensors to music and light. Dancer/perfomers wear masks and costumes that protect them from traditional means of facial recognition and emotional profiling in order to envision an alternate utopia in which our bio-emotional data is creatively used by ourselves rather than exploited by corporations and governments.
CELSO challenges dominant techno-logics that use sensors/data to promote hegemonic norms, misguided security measures, and skewed notions of mental health and body image. We hijack these technologies and instead invite participants to interpret the sonic, visual, emotional maelstrom on display as an emergent multi-person organism with their own lenses. CELSO is a larger research project for the collective investigating the ethics and means of collecting bio-emotional data. CELSO’s project has iterative phases in which project needs are coordinated culminating in a premiere. At each phase gate we will review the previous phase, and repeat the cycle from the start, while preparing production and performance elements in tandem with hardware.
We present our research findings as an evening length performance with dance/theatre, live music, custom coded interactives and wearables with CELSO: Digital Milk.
This is likely one of the earliest usages of ChatGPT in a performance, it had come out a month before we started rehearsals. In Digital Milk, ChatGPT (version 3.5) is both an actor/oracle that is queried by performers to foreshadow the story of the optimizers and hibernators. Since we were working on a narrative about apocalyptic AI, artificial cognition, machine learning and Singularity, using this veritable horseman made sense.
Digital Milk a feminist story of world birth, AI gods and dystopia. It critiques the sharing economy and highlighting the “invisible” labor forces behind it, Content, warns of the worship of the apocalypse of Singularity/ AGI, questions what the definition of intelligence is and foreshadows the impending AI driven layoffs where human labor is no longer needed as well as the climate collapses.
We all live off of digital milk.
